Instructions for Planting and Maintenance for Caliber Trees

  1. Dig a hole 2 times the diameter of the pot or the root ball.
  2. Depth of the hole in CLAY SOIL: the depth of the hole should be 2 cm less than the height of the pot or 10 to 15 cm less than the height of the root ball; the ball of the planted vegetation should be higher than the existing soil level. Do not loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole, simply place the wire basket or the burlap root ball into the hole. Fill in the remaining gaps with a mixture of ¾ topsoil and ¼ peat moss. Do not reuse the existing soil (see illustration A).
  3. Depth of the hole in SANDY SOIL: the depth of the hole should be 10 to 15 cm more than the height of the pot or 5 to 10 cm less than the height of the root ball. Once planted, the potted vegetation should be level with the existing soil and the wire basket or burlap should be slightly higher. For potted vegetation, fill the bottom of the hole and the side gaps with a mixture of 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 topsoil and 1/3 existing soil. For a root ball, do not loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole. Simply place the root ball into the hole and fill in the side gaps with the same mixture (see illustration B).
  4. If it is in a peat moss pot, make sure to carefully remove the bottom of the pot and place the plant in the hole. Cut the side of the pot vertically in 2 or 3 places.
  5. If it is in a plastic pot, carefully remove the pot without damaging the root ball.
  6. If the root ball is covered with burlap or a wire basket, do not remove any of its packaging.
  7. Pack the soil lightly to eliminate air pockets.
  8. Dig a shallow trench in a circle around the plant.
  9. Water abundantly after planting. Continue to water 2 to 3 times a week, unless there is rain, for a 2-to-3-week period. Put the hose in the watering saucer and allow the water to slowly flow for an hour either early in the morning or late in the day.
  10. A transplanting fertilizer is required. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  11. Trees must be staked for the first growing year only.
  12. Plants sensitive to rodents and/or cold weather conditions need to be protected.
  13. Clause 1 to 12 are general instructions that may vary according to species.
